The UEFA Super Cup is the official curtain raiser for the 2022-23 European club football season. It is held between the winners of the UCL and UEL every year.
Spanish powerhouses Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League for a record-extending 14th time in May 2022, beating Liverpool 1-0 in the final.
German side Eintracht Frankfurt, on the other hand, won the Europa League after beating Rangers 5-4 in a penalty shootout, with the match ending 1-1 in regulation time. It was the club’s first European trophy since the 1980 UEFA Cup.

Head-to-Head

Players to Watch and Injury News
Real Madrid, managed by Carlo Ancelotti, will begin as favourites with stars like Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Thibaut Courtois and David Alaba in the squad. They have also signed young French talent Aurelien Tchouameni and German defender Antonio Rudiger.
Dani Carvajal made his return from an ankle injury in the pre-season friendly against Juventus on 31st July and looks ready to feature in the Super Cup final. Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed in his pre-season press conference that the rest of the squad is fully fit.
Eintracht Frankfurt have been bolstered by the arrival of World Cup winner Mario Gotze, Coupe de France winner Randal Kolo Muani and Jens Petter Hauge but star winger Filip Kostić looks set to leave and join Juventus in the next few days.
For Frankfurt, centre-half Jérôme Onguéné is a major doubt for the clash due to thigh muscle strain. While right-back Aurélio Buta is ruled out of the clash due to a knee injury. The defender is expected to return in September 2022.
Semi-Automated Offside Technology
The UEFA Super Cup 2022 will also feature the Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) for the first time in European club competition. It is a new system to assist in offside decisions, with special cameras tracking players to determine their position at different points of a match. The new system will operate thanks to specialized cameras which are able to track 29 different body points per player.
Who is the Favorite?
Real Madrid
Eintracht Frankfurt
Frankfurt lost their opening game of the Bundesliga season 6-1 against Bayern Munich. Despite their impressive Europa League victory last season, Frankfurt only managed to finish 11th in the league.
